STINK N DUTTY NOT A REVIEW JUST A SMALL SUMMARY

We landed safely, got home grabbed a bite to eat (KFC) and started getting ready for Stink n Dutty!

EXCITEMENTS!!!

I don't know why people are shocked to hear that this was my first Stink n Dutty.

Like, EVER.

I didn't know what to expect yet expected everything all at the same time. There aren't many pictures or videos from this event because I don't care how much plastic phone case I am given or I buy... the water, paint and powder have a way of getting to MY phone each and every time!

It was alleged that there was a data breach with IslandETickets that would hinder people from entering the event and that's why the new two step authorization was implemented.

I'm selling it as I buy it okay.

I've heard that once people got to the front of the line they were turned away because their tickets have been previously scanned.  Once they notified IslandETickets they were refunded almost immediately. Fortunately for myself and my carnival jumbie (Toy Toy), we were safe and were given our access to the Cart Park.

                                                                    (Radiance's Cart)

Now, I don't know exactly how people could tolerate general in Stink n Dutty because general was facing the back of the stage. This was a first for me. I've never witnessed such disrespect. Please correct me if I'm wrong because the liquor was definitely liquoring but when we went to see some friends in general (to link up for the ride home) we noticed that they were not facing the stage front but the 'stage back'?!  Who was in charge of that one?

Is this not the front?
Well they were on the other side.

To be honest, the best word to describe the time had in Stink n Dutty would be EUPHORIC. If that was the feeling they were going for with that 'hippie' theme, they got it!  This fete was a GREAT start to my carnival season. I'd give this fete a 9/10 and that's only because of how far I had to travel to get there and the traffic on the highway getting home. Thank God for drivers! It's a younger crowd but once you go with your tribe, does it matter who else is there? You're there to have a time, do that!

MIAMI BROWARD CARNIVAL EVENT TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE

TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE

FOR ANYONE NOT AFFILIATED WITH A JOUVERT OR CARNIVAL MAS BAND!

JUNIOR CARNIVAL better known as Kiddies Carnival will be on Saturday, October 5th 2024.  Pre-Sale tickets are $20 plus fees or the "Fren an Dem" package of 5 get one free for $100 plus fees.  The kiddies carnival is set to begin at 1pm and ending at 10. Personally, I don't understand why it's 9 hours long.  There are children that come out in strollers and walkers that can not make it in that hot sun for that long.. It needs to be broken down or sped up or something.  That is too many hours for these babies. But again, that's my personal opinion.

PANORAMA is Friday, October 11th, 2024. Single Pre-Sale tickets are $30 plus fees and the "Fren an Dem" package for $150 which gives you 5 tickets and the 6th one is free.  Panorama is from 4pm on their flyer and 5 to 11pm on the website.  Of the two, I don't know exactly which time it actually starts but let's go with 5 for safe measure. I truly wished that more people would take in the Panorama.

JOUVERT is Saturday, October 12th, 2024. Single Pre-Sale is $65 plus fees and the "Fren and Dem" is $325 plus fees which gives you 5 tickets and the 6th one is free.

CARNIVAL DAY PARADE PLUS CONCERT Single Pre-Sale is $50 plus fees and the "Fren and Dem" is $250 plus fees which gives you 5 tickets and the 6th one is free. After that, it becomes a little complicated for carnival day. It has early bird options, cabanas, children's tickets, etc. I ain't able. Should any of these tickets call your name, feel free to purchase by clicking -----> HERE <-----

Let's do this right.  Support the carnival in one way or the other. Pay to get into a band or pay the association so everyone can continue celebrating in our culture.

THE PEOPLE'S JOUVERT! MY WEST PALM BEACH JOUVERT EXPERIENCE......

When I first saw this event advertised, I wasn't going. I didn't feel to drive 45 minutes to an hour for a jouvert that hasn't been established.  It was the first of what I understood to be an annual event and with many firsts, there is always good and bad.  The good is that there's usually LOTS of funding and everything is always on point and is given to patrons in abundance.  The bad is that this is normally where lots of the hiccups happen and they learn for future events.  So with that being said, I will get into the reason you tuned in.

Trudy of Carnival Faces enlightened me to her involvement in the #ThePeoplesJouvert movement and that automatically peaked my interest. Not only because she is one of the few that is trying to preserve the culture but she is one that I truly consider a friend. Fast foward to collection.  As media, I had no collecting to do but my team was able to conveniently collect.  There was no line, mishaps or headaches.
Not too bad.
The packages included:
  • A drawstring bag to fit everything into
  • A checklist
  • A plastic bag which had your powder
  • Your teeshirt/bodysuit
  • Reject linen *the orange bag you see
  • A whistle
  • A mask
  • Meal chit
  • Cup
  • Telephone case
About this package.  It was decent enough, no real complaints but a few observations.
  1.  The bag was decent enough.
  2.  The reject linen idea. I appreciated not having to take one of my heavy duty black garbage bags to sit on afterward and that they actually thought of masqueraders here. LOVE.
  3. The bodysuit snapped in the crutch. Those who planned on wearing stockings had to either not wear it or come up with another option.  One of my friends ripped it and sew it back together and the other just didn't wear it. Thing is, it snags the stockings. Personally, I don't wear stockings on the road whether jourvert or carnival so I was good.
  4. The meal chit given was made of paper.  Paper anything at a jouvert doesn't mix.  By the time I was ready to eat my chit was destroyed by water and paint and was in pieces.
  5. The cup was "moody".  It changed color by temperature.  That wasn't expected and was a pleasant surprise.  It's the little things with me.  Best of all, the cup was covered. This jouvert I didn't have to fight with the paint or the powder while having my drink.
  6. We expected the telephone case to be one of those plastic waterproof cases but it was actually a sealed plastic bag courtesy of Great Value. Hear nah, we all laughed! BUT that is actually the best thing to protect your phone while at a jouvert after those waterproof cases. Telephone cameras work excellent while in them. It was just the shock factor of what we were expecting vs what we got....

Small thing.  Jouvert is not a fashion show. We go with the intention of getting dirty but it was worth mentioning.

On to the event itself.

I can't remember the time we got to the venue but the sun was up.  I want to believe we got there around 7:30 and hung out drinking and talking a bit and walked in around 8.  For 3 of us on the team, there was a problem with the green wristbands for the drinks.  They weren't snapping closed propertly. The solution was to give us a yellow wristband for our writsts, tie the green wristband somewhere on our person and keep our cups.  Sounded good to me.

As we walked in, we were greeted by a paint station.
Here you picked your color poison.  There was just enough water in the paint to not make it stick (or smell, thank God).  We made several trips to this station.
When I saw the size of the bar, I figured that within the next hour or two that it would be a problem getting a drink but it never was.  As soon as I approached the bar, I was attended to immediately. There was honestly NEVER a line.  Whenever there was a crowd at the bar, you came to quickly realize that the crowd was just liming there and not waiting to be served.

I am not sure of all the DJ's as I only got there by 8 or so but I got there in time to hear Jay Dot, Rocksteady, DJ Bonez, House Arrest and DJ J Rocca.
The DJ who played the rap/hip hop is the only one that I could have gone without hearing.  Don't know who exactly it was but he played rap and slow songs and said it was "for the ladies".  Hear nah, I'm a lady and had no desire to hear the slow songs. I patronized the rap/hip hop but that too I could have done without.  This is JOUVERT and no matter how you'd like to spin in, JOUVERT is a Caribbean event and we want to hear CARIBBEAN music. Period.  There were those that fully enjoyed it but for me personally, I did not. Then there was the neverending struggle for DJ's.  DJ House Arrest had to keep the crowd's attention when newer soca selections were being played so he had to resort to the commercial songs but I understood that it had to be done as he learned the crowd.  I thank God that he didn't have to go so deep to play "Palance".  In closing, when the truck began to move DJ J Rocca was playing and as it was near to the end, he let loose on the newer songs.  The song that mash up the place for me was:
CLICK HERE TO LISTEN!

All in all, The People's Jouvert in West Palm Beach was great.  West Palm Beach Police said that "this was the easiest festival" they've had to manage. Job well done guys, you get an 9 out of 10 (from me). The event was SAFE and without incident or injury. I thought this was going to be an annual thing but the birdies have told me that it will be twice a year and not trying in any way to compete with the Miami Carnival jouvert in October.  This is just something to scratch the jouvert itch that many of us have.  I plan on being there for the rest. West Palm Beach, I didn't know allyuh had it in yuh!!!!

MY JOUVERT MORNING THOUGHTS.....

Let me begin by saying this is MY experience, MY thoughts and MY personal space to vent.  This is MY pulpit, forum and soapbox.  Should you agree or disagree and decide to leave a comment, feel free to do so but do so respectfully.  Although this space is included in the world wide web, it is MY space and I will not tolerate disrespect whether directed to a person who has commented or myself, your comment will be deleted and you will be blocked.  With that being said, lehwe go!

Being the last band on the road definitely has it's perks and I enjoyed myself to the max because once you have your family/friends in the midst, yuh more than good to go.  This year however, I must say that the Miami Broward Carnival committee did some garbage that I simply must get off my chest.  I mean, it's been festering since jouvert morning, that was since the 10th of October and I fine it's time.

As I listened to the plan of the committee for jouvert, I was admittedly confused.  Not confused with what they were planning to do but with how the plan would actually be executed.  Should the plan had been for a jouvert with only trucks, the plan would have worked out perfectly however a jouvert event has this complex animal called PEOPLE.  LOTS of PEOPLE attend jouvert and with the thousands of PEOPLE added to the "plan" it just would not have worked, I knew that going in and it's a shame that the masqueraders suffer.

Let's begin with the parking.
When coming to parking all I could do was shake my head at the level phuckery.  It was on an all time high that Saturday morning. Knowing that my band is always last I am never in a rush to get to the park but when I got there, the changes sickened me.  (Sorry, I am a creature of habit).

First, I was instructed to park on the left side of where the traffic was headed. Second, I was told that the driver (me) was the only one allowed into the parking area and 3.  The price for parking had changed in the matter of 4 minutes. Well, I had news for the bad news bearers. I was 1. NOT going to separate from my crew.  They were going to sit in the car right with me. 2. I was carrying almost 1,000 lbs (hugely exaggerated) of paint and powder for the band and could not carry it from the general parking lot to the jouvert truck by myself nor was I making an attempt to and 3.  How is it the price changed from $10 to some other price that I can not remember in the matter of 4 minutes?  Don't get me wrong, paying for parking wasn't my issue.  The issue for me was paying what people just felt like charging me.  There was no sign, no little chit, no nothing indicating that money had been paid aside from some fool telling me it was one price and within 10 feet another clown giving me another.  Who? Not me. Not my money!  I continued to drive and I am somehow always blessed to always be in the right place at the right time and ended up directly in front of Mario Zamora.  I told him about all the paint and powder in my truck and explained that parking so far from our jouvert truck would cause a problem with transporting it especially if my crew had to separate from me. Just like that, access was granted and I swear, I felt like like a Hebrew when Moses parted the Red Sea.  Could you imagine small me trying to tote hundreds of plastic bottles of paint and powder inside the park?

Entrance to the park.
So now we're waiting at the front gate to get inside.  It felt like watching paint dry.  There was no need for the wait.  Nothing was going on.  No trucks were blocking the front gate and they certainly had enough man power to allow vehicles inside. There were men just about everywhere doing absolutely nothing but making people miserable and stopping them for no reason and without explanation.  That led me to believe that all the waiting was deliberate.  If it wasn't deliberate, why not give people an explanation for why they were being held up?  I understand that everyone has a job to do but in my experience with dealing with crowds, it is far easier to get a positive response and even some corporation from people who have an understanding of what's going on. Maybe, just maybe this wasn't deliberate but like I said before these are my feelings, and this is my blog space to voice them.  If I were given some sort of explanation I would not have had to come up with one of my own. Anyway while still waiting outside the front gate, I saw members of both Dutty Pleasures Jouvert and Mudd Maddness Jouvert at the gate toting food back and forth to their band and clearly thinking that they were mad to be doing all of that in the hot sun.  I mean, who in their right mind would want to tote food and to so many people?  Ha ha stay calm, I'm getting there soon.  We were finally let into the park.  Mind you, nothing had changed. There were no vehicles being searched or let into the park, no tickets or hand bands being checked, no money being counted, I mean NOTHING changed but alas, we were allowed into the park.  Once we got in and found our truck it was smooth sailing.....until people got hungry....

Denial at the gate.
Once the truck, music, paint, powder and liquor started to flow it was only natural that people get hungry. I was so excited to get into the gate that I didn't realize that the staff at the front gate was not allowing food trucks for the bands to enter the park.  Again,
(well, maybe not where's the food)
Thank the Lord my truck was parked at the front gate so we could just load it up and drive the food to it's destination because that was LEVEL assness!  Aye, I cuss so stink my little high was gone.  Let's do the math.  There were 20 jouvert bands.  Each band had a minimum masquerader requirement of 200 I believe.  I'm not the jouvert godmother.  Now I know for a FACT that there were 3 bands with over 1,000 people and 2 with over 500 but for argument sake, we will stick with 200 people in 20 bands.  That is 4,000 people.  HOW THE ASS DID THEY EXPECT 4,000 PEOPLE TO EAT?! McDONALDS FROM THE CORNER? JOY'S? NO... Couldn't be, because they came up with an asinine ticket system for entry for 2015 which meant NO RE-ENTRY.  So maybe they thought VENDORS? Nah, vendors couldn't feed that many people.  So how did they expect for the masqueraders to eat lunch?
Did they just not care?
Did they expect for the masqueraders to only eat breakfast?  They did provide wonderful tents for each band to distribute their breakfast but hello....what happen to our lunch?  We are Caribbean people and can comber-squat anywhere an eat but if the food isn't present, what exactly are we eating?!
Did they not think that lunch was included in these jouvert packages?
Did they just not think that far?
Did they not care?
I have so many questions.  None of which will ever be answered. Drinking people need to eat ESPECIALLY at jouvert.  John Pubic may or not believe it but people hit the drinks truck harder for jouvert than for carnival, food is paramount!!

Although I enjoyed myself in Something Jouvert, I walked through all the bands to hail friends and show my face.  For the most part people were enjoying themselves but were stagnant.  I thought this problem was confined to my band as we were last and had to wait on 19 bands to clear the way but no.  The reality was that there were TOO MANY BANDS INSIDE THAT PARK. The bands weren't flowing and the whole dynamic of the jouvert got me well annoyed. 20 bands means 20 trucks. There just isn't enough room! Jouvert is a time to break away not jump in one spot like Shadow!  Allowing 20 bands in that little park for 6 hours was the epitome of greed and something needs to be done cause THAT was jammishness! Who knows, maybe the reason the food trucks weren't allowed in the park was because there were too many truck in there already!!

I expect to get cuss by a couple people well but it is what it is.  It have we, the masqueraders who partake in the carnival for the love of our culture feeling upset. Remember,  it has many people who connect with me to voice their opinions.  Many of which rather stay anonymous but do share the same sentiment as I.  While many people are thinking about lining their pockets the masqueraders are all beginning to see the greed.  Greed on who's part is an entirely separate blog but let's see if jouvert will reach 30 bands next year.....smh.  Bless.

BATTLE OF THE JOUVERT BANDS TONIGHT

This has got to be the most genius idea for the entire Miami Carnival season!  A prejouvert party.  There have been many a people (myself included) that have either missed a portion of jouvert or have missed it completely because they've tried to 'stay awake' at home and have ended up falling asleep just before the hour they were scheduled to be awake.

I remember living in Brooklyn.  Raleigh Place and Church Ave was always full of excitement and there was no way to miss the jouvert because the buzz was in the air, the people, the laughter, the building of the trucks and the loud music wouldn't allow it.  Not everyone has the luxury of having that much excitement at their doorsteps, especially here in South Florida.  There is no lime on every corner as it is in the BK and you have to drive E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E down here.

This is how Miami Vice the Masqueradas Fete was born.  The solution for the 'problem' is to create your own excitement and vibes.  On Friday night, the 9th of October there will be a fete that will begin around 10pm and end as a jouvert send off.  Masqueraders will be able to leave directly from Miami Vice and head straight into Miami Jouvert!  It'll be an assembly of all jouvert bands.

Let's see which jouvert band will have the biggest attendance!  It's the battle of the jouverts!  Once you go in your jouvert attire, you are given 50% entry to the fete.  That's a win win.  Let's go!!!!!

SOCA BRAINWASH MIAMI: BIENVENIDO A MIAMI

There are many changes to mention with this event but we'll wait til the ticket sales have started to mention them.

It's hard for me to remain upset with my DJ crush for doing this as his talent surpass his wrong doings. Do any of you see the problem with this event?  The event starts at 2pm and ends at 8pm.   I TOTALLY get it. Scorch is after Soca Brainwash and DJ Private Ryan is most likely carded for both BUT what about the die hard Private Ryan followers who are also die hard jouvert partakers??

The Miami Carnival jouvert is scheduled from 6am until 2pm and the plan for many was to revel for each minute of the allotted time.  Seeing as every request, suggestion and plea with the man himself were all ignored, I have no other choice but to change my jouvert plans as missing this event is NOT an option and I will have to leave the jouvert at EXACTLY 2pm!  Talking about DJ Private Ryan's events, that leads me to the last event in Miami "Leo".  That review will be up tomorrow.

Ticket information, location and pricing will be made public soon.  Just remember to have your money on hand when the website becomes active.  *Last time I gave a warning was for Euphoria Mas' band launch. Not everyone got their money up and were quite upset, complaining and reportedly crying at the speed the band was sold out in.  Don't be left out in the cold.

(MEMOIRS, A MUSICAL JOURNEY)
My affiliates and I will be attending the Mudd Maddness launch.  After all, it's family!  After that we will part ways and attend separate events.  I will be headed to Memoirs in Hollywood where I will be taken back in time, while they will attend the band launch. I can not wait for tomorrow!!!!

J'OUVERT BAND LAUNCH!

Are you ready for the madness?
Are you ready for the mud?
Jamdong Management has got you covered!
This Saturday, the 13th of June Jamdong Management promises a jouvert band launch like no other to hit South Florida.  Let me just say that getting dressed in your Sunday best is NOT recommended. Do NOT go in "Mudd Maddness" dressed to kill because there is a good chance you will be leaving covered in mud.  Jamdong's intent is to give their patrons a preview of the mud they'll be chipping in come October 10th.

Let me give you some suggestions:

  • Dress accordingly, expect to leave M&J Auto the same way you'd leave a typical jouvert.  If you do not get mud on you, at least you were prepared for the worst.
  • Expect to register at the launch Saturday.  If mud mas is what you'd like to play, this band is your way to go.  It is the only band that is completely mud.
  • Walk with a change of clothes.
  • Walk with large garbage bags to protect your car seats.
  • Come with an open mind, ready to party and leave the stresses at home.
  • Purchase your advance tickets because time is running out! Ticket locations are posted on the flyer below.

WEEKEND FISH FRY

This will be a great lime! The last time we went to the location shown below, it was for the fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao and we know how disappointing that fight was. The fish fry will be my redeemer. Come out, play some cards, enjoy music by live DJ's and especially great food. All proceeds go toward the Passion section of the Mud Maddness. The Mud Maddness jouvert by Jamdong Management will be taking place next Saturday.  Hope to see you at both events!

JAMBORII RUMORS PUT TO REST....

Everyone dreads a rumor.  Let's face it, rumors are basically untruths that are spread by people who have no knowledge of the facts. That in itself is a headache especially when your reputation is on the line.  Rumors that come out of nowhere and are farthest from the truth can be the most infuriating but the ones intertwined with part of the truth are the hardest to control or get rid of.

Jamborii Mas has already been the target of a very dangerous rumor.  The rumor report is that PUNCH, their first Miami event, the first ever Breakfast Party Band Launch.  The event that they have been promoting for the past couple months has been shut down by the Planning and Zoning Commission and will no longer be taking place. -- THAT'S WRONG, but not completely--

THE FACTS:

  • There was an original venue located in Hialeah.
  • The original venue *named Rancho Okeechobee has preexisting and unsolved issues with not only The Planning and Zoning Commission but the local Law Enforcement of Hialeah.  This information was withheld from JAMBORII Mas and thankfully, the business owner practices good business/customer service and returned money with no issue.
  • To continue planning PUNCH at this venue would have been like buying their trouble wholesale, so an executive decision was made to move PUNCH to ToeJam Backlot in Wynwood.
  • Current online ticket holders will not be turned away.
  • There will be no replacement tickets given.  JAMBORII Mas Committee members are fully aware of what the old and new addresses are and what the old and new tickets look like.  Both the old and new tickets will be accepted at the door.
  • To compensate for the inconvenience of the patrons more DJ's have been added for listening pleasure.  There will be Titan VCD & Ding Dong, DJ Stryker and DJ Quinn (from Trinidad's Red96.7), DJ Sweeba,  DJ Code Red, DJ Ghost, DJ So Prince Larry (from NYC) and one of my personal favorites DJ Victorious!
  • There will be tasty food on sale.
There are no hard feelings between the either parties as both sides have been courteous and professional.  As the old saying goes, every disappointment is for a good.  This venue change was just that, a venue change.  The zoning and law enforcement issues are issues of Hialeah and that is NOT where PUNCH will be held.  So don't be afraid, the party is very much on and the JAMBORII Mas is more than ready to show you their portrayals for Miami Carnival and Jouvert all at the same launch!  Keep in mind, JAMBORII Mas is STILL holding the crown as being the first ever breakfast cooler fete and band launch in one.

TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE AT JAMBORII MAS

MIAMI JOUVERT RUMOR SET........ STRAIGHT?

This is a record breaker! The Miami Carnival One rumors have begun but this time it's not about the carnival but the jouvert!

The Miami Broward One Carnival Committee has done an ah-ma-zing job at not only bringing what feels like the closest thing to a Trinidad and Tobago jouvert to the "Miami Carnival" experience but going strong without casualty for the last 3 years at the Broward Regional Park is just as impressive. I have always loved the venue because it is not even a 10 minute drive from my home but I think this is the earliest that I've heard rumors start.  Yes, as early as February the 'niggagram' has already started about the location of the jouvert to being changed from the Broward Regional Park to a location in Doral. Not even an exact venue ok but that it will be held "somewhere in Doral, where the Miami Carnival was last year".

Now, I'm a firm believer of where there is smoke, there is a fire so I've done my own investigation seeing as this rumor affects me directly.  I was assured that the Miami jouvert that has been held at the Broward Regional Park for the last three years, is still the official site/venue of the jouvert for 2015.  In the same breath, it was also said that the option was still on the table but as for now, Lauderhill is the oficial site for jouvert.  Wait, what?  Which one is it? Sounds more to me like Lauderhill is secured but they're still looking for something bigger, better or possibly cheaper.  This late in the game and with the size of crowd expected, things like venue should already be finalized so my confidence is pretty much high for 2015 but I'd look out for 2016. Lauderhill may not be the home for our jouvert for much longer.

If you feel like me and would love to see the jouvert stay where it is in Lauderhill or maybe not, either way you have a voice.  Send letters, make phone calls and send emails to voice what you'd like to see happen.  People tend to underestimate just how much power they have to make changes.
